Cozumel Restaurants and Bars

Cozumel restaurants with a long local history.

One of my favorite Cozumel restaurants is El Moro (generally thought to mean "The Arab"). No Cozumel Vacation experience would be complete without a taste of classic Mexican and Yucatecan cuisine. El Moro has been serving up great mouth watering delights since 1979. The reason they have been so successful over the years is not because of their great location either. Finding El Moro is not easy. The street where they are located is one block long and hard to find if you don't know where it is. The good news is that every taxi driver in Cozumel knows where it is so you can get there without a problem. If you are driving a rental car you can always explore your way to it!

My first meal at El Moro was in 1983. We put lots of extremely hot chilies on our food then. I've been going to El Moro ever since. Now that I am older and wiser I order things less spicy but very tasty. And you will find no shortage of tasty as well as spicy dishes on the menu. El Moro's menu is very extensive and the prices range from 30 pesos for appetizers to an average of $150 pesos for the main course. You can get certain dishes for two that will cost around $250 pesos.

Your waiter will approach you with a big smile and make you feel at home the minute you walk in. The first thing that will come to your table is their tortilla "chips and salsa". The salsa can be spicy if you ask. The chips are thick, large Cozumel Restaurants with warm smiles to greet you.and fresh. This will get you started on what will be a great culinary experience! Since the menu is big you will not have a problem finding something that you like, however, I highly recommend the "Bistec Tampique
ño" if you are in the mood for steak. It is extremely flavorful and comes with chicken enchiladas in a molé sauce, rice, refried beans, plantains, corn or flower tortillas and guacamole with some chips. It will make your mouth water! If on the other hand you are in the mood for fish, I recommend the Filete or "Pescado Empapelado". It is a fish filet (catch of the day) in a cream sherry type sauce, wrapped in aluminum foil and broiled in onions, green peppers with shrimp on top. This is definitely a must try if you like seafood.

I recently ate at El Moro and had their version of Bananas Foster (plantains flambé). It was simply the best flaming bananas desert I've ever had. I think that their secret recipe contains Stabatung, which means "Nectar of the gods"! There is a fully stocked bar for those who have special drinks that they enjoy with their meal. There is also an air hockey game and internet cafe for those who might have restless teenagers that would like to stay occupied while the parents are "chatting".

Before I wrote this web site up (August 29th, 2006) I took my camera with me to take pictures of the meal. As you can see, there are no pictures of the main course or desert on this page. That's because I was so busy eating that I forgot to take the pictures. Seriously!

So are you getting hungry? Well, what are you waiting for!? Plan your next visit to Cozumel and make sure to go to El Moro!! :-)

El Moro is located on 75th Ave. Norte Bis. behind the new Pemex gas station. Sorry, they are Closed Thursdays.
