Cozumel Mexico Vacation Guide
Cozumel Fishing!

Our Cozumel Fishing experience:

Today, March 1st. 2009 was a most extraordinary day. My friend Javier (Captain Javier) never told me about his boat or his experience in the 12 years that I've known him. But today changed all of that!

At 6:00 am I boarded his 41 foot Hatteras and we embarked on a picture perfect day of what turned out to be one of my favorite "fish stories" of all time!

Just as I was about to dose off on the upper level captains deck I heard one of the crew yell something. When I sat up I could see that he was waiving me down because we had a "fish on"! I promptly scurried down the ladder and sat in the hot seat. I instinctively just started reeling; and before I knew it we gaffed a very respectable sized Barracuda.

Of course having a lot of experience fishing the waters of Cozumel, I knew it was no great accomplishment to catch a Barracuda but of course it is always nice to real in a large fish, no matter what its called. At this point I was still just enjoying the beautiful day, crystal clear azure seas and the comradery that comes with fishing along with friends.

Little did I know that shortly after my catch the next fish was already on, and it was one of the largest Wahoo that I've seen caught in these waters! That was shortly followed by a shark (which is rare to catch on trolling ballyhoo). And shortly thereafter I hooked up another Wahoo! Then when I thought that I had reached nirvana we ended our HALF DAY of fishing by catching a BEARUIFUL bull dolphin with the most iridescent pectoral fins that I have ever seen!

Anyone who is a seasoned fisherman knows that fishing (or should I say Catching fish) is a combination of a great crew, perfect water temperature, finely tuned motors with perfectly balanced propellers, and last but not least, that all important LUCK! Well today we had it all. As I listened to the radio on the upper deck I could hear that we had the best day of all the boats that went out today.

What surprised me just as much as my perfect day of  "catching" was that Javier never told me in the 12 years that I've known him that his beautiful and meticulously maintained 41 foot Hatteras and crew are for hire! He charges $525 USD for a half day and $625 for a full day.

Sergio, who I've known for over 20 years has a stellar track record and is still the best "bang for the buck: when it comes to fishing here ($375 for a full day).

However, if you are a fishing perfectionist and feel the need to go out on a classic Hatteras to enjoy that extra special edge, then I must recommend Javier (if your budget allows). When you go to the reservation page you will find a drop down menu that will allow you to choose between Sergio and Javier. Both are uniquely different experiences and both are priced for a GREAT dollar/value ratio. The choice is yours!
