Cozumel Concierge was invited to a private viewing of
this most exotic island by the current owners (the Camou family). It is
appropriately named "Passion Island" because of its rich
history within the Mayan culture. When Cozumel was settled by the Mayas
in 300 AD it was home to the goddess of fertility,
Ixchel;
who resided in San Gervasio in the interior of the island. Young women
from all over the Mayas would make the pilgrimage to San Gervasio as a
right of passage into adulthood. This
The pilgrimage was divided essentially in two parts lasting two weeks. The first part was spent at the San Gervasio religious site where the high priest would impart wisdom and a cleansing of the soul was performed along with sweat baths. The second week (and most important week) was spent on Passion Island! This was where the couple would consummate their marriage; hence it was dubbed "Passion Island" or more properly "Isla de Pasion"!
The first time I stepped foot on Passion Island was in 1987. It was only accessible by boat and still is! At that time the only full time inhabitants were the Raccoons. Most of the island hasn't changed a bit.
The pristine beauty of this very special Island has actually been enhanced by more then 17 inches of fine white powdery sand, which was given to the island by Hurricane Wilma in 2005. It is the largest white sand beach by far on Cozumel Island; only this is not actually just any sland.
It is a private island within an island..... Passion Island!
